Let’s be clear: sweating is a necessary and totally normal bodily function. We sweat to help regulate our body temperature when it gets too hot. An energetic workout or afternoon in the hot summer sun is going to produce a degree of sweat in all bodies. When you find yourself sweating in the milder months while sitting at your computer or chatting at brunch with friends on a December afternoon, there could be a reason. Excessive sweating or “hyperhidrosis” is a condition that affects around 2-3% of Americans. You are not alone!

Hyperhidrosis can have a dramatic impact on the sufferer. Clothes shopping becomes a hot changing room of horror – there are only so many black or very dark clothes you can add to your wardrobe. Social events are passed on when you find out they will be outside on a warm day. Jackets stay on, arms stay folded or hang down, tight against your sides. Maybe you get asked to be a bridesmaid for your closest friend, but you say no because you can’t bear the thought of what you may have to wear and ruin. Antiperspirant is applied regularly throughout the day in the hope that it can contain the wet, slickness always there. Tops are kept in bags to be changed into throughout the day when the sweat stains make an appearance. It is not a fun condition to have.

You Are Not Alone - Famous People Have Hyperhidrosis Too.

There are some very high profile celebrities with excessive sweat problems. Halle Berry is someone who will show her pit stains with pride on chat shows, and she is regularly on the “Most Beautiful Women in the World’ list. Another gorgeous celebrity who struggles with sweaty armpits is Emma Stone. She even managed to sweat all over Ryan Gosling in “La La Land.” She did get an Oscar for it though.

And it’s not just celebrity ladies who struggle with the lake of wet under the arms. Steve Carell is our favorite office manager and boat maker and now our favorite sweaty man. For Twilight fans, did you know Robert Pattinson is a sufferer too? Being his make-up person on set must have been a stressful role – vampires are meant to be cool to the touch and immune to human conditions. He must have been dripping like the monster from the Black Lagoon!

Don't Despair, There Is A Treatment!

MiraDry was FDA approved in 2012 and is now available throughout the US. It uses precisely controlled energy to eliminate the underarm sweat glands. They don’t grow back which stops the sweating. No glands, no sweat stains – what’s not to love about that? Our bodies have over 4 million sweat glands, so they won’t miss the 2% housed under our arms. That means it is safe to use, and our bodies can still regulate our temperature. It just won’t be so obvious to everyone else.

The treatment takes around an hour and there is minimal discomfort. Some over the counter pain relief and a nice, cold ice pack should help. You may even be able to do it during a long lunch break. Hold off on the spin class for a couple of days though. Some swelling and tenderness may occur but you should be back to normal within 5 weeks.

Nearly 5% of the World's population suffers from Hyperhidrosis - excessive sweating. That's nearly 365 million people!

And The Good News Just Keeps Coming

In 2015 MiraDry was also FDA approved to permanently destroy underarm hair of all colors and destroy odor glands. No more salty, pungent odors wafting from your pits. Imagine less deep-sea fisherman and more Disney Princess, maybe even small birds will tweet around your head! So bonus situation, you go in to stop the sweat and end up being able to throw your razors away.

But Does It Work?

People who have had MiraDry are very happy with the results. Personal blogs outlining their experiences are common. It has been life changing for so many people. Scientific studies have been very positive too. A 2012 clinical study had excellent results – nearly 90% of patients had a reduction in sweat under their arms. Don’t expect it to eliminate all sweat but you won’t need to changes clothes frequently or apply deodorant constantly. And you can wear whatever makes you feel fabulous.

With advances like MiraDry, excessive sweat sufferers no longer have to put up with the inconveniences it brings. The procedure is quick with little pain, and on average you are only required to have 2 treatments. It is also reasonably priced. So say goodbye to disgusting stains and foul odors and hello to bright colored clothes and outdoor social events. But most importantly, raise your hands up in the air, like you just don’t care!
