Over the past few years there has been some buzz about the latest technological advancements in women’s sexual health. Some talk has been good, some bad, and some in between. DiVa, the hybrid fractional laser that helps women’s intimate issues regarding gynecological health, sexual ability, and personal comfort, is certainly not immune to receiving “buzz.” So amidst all the talk, where is the line between truth and fiction?

Read below for clarification about DiVa, the FDA, and other myths about DiVa!

What's going on with DiVa and the FDA?

In July of 2018, the FDA released a statement concerning “vaginal rejuvenation” procedures, basically saying that the FDA had not gathered enough information to approve certain aspects of vaginal rejuvenation procedures. This means that while DiVa-type laser treatments are FDA approved for treating abnormal cervical/vaginal tissue, vaginal warts, and pre-cancerous cervical/vaginal tissue, the FDA hasn’t approved it for other vaginal rejuvenation procedures like vaginal atrophy, vaginal laxity, dryness, itchiness, pain, urinary incontinence, etc.

Does this mean that DiVa isn’t safe? DiVa is perfectly safe! As stated above, the FDA has approved DiVa to treat various medical conditions related to women’s intimate health, like abnormal vaginal tissue. It’s safe to treat other women’s issues too, and has nearly all-positive reviews from women who’ve had DiVa.

Since DiVa is safe, why is the FDA concerned?

The FDA’s main concern can be summarized in a few words: The FDA does not want women to ignore possibly serious medical issues by getting DiVa without further medical investigation first. DiVa can greatly improve women’s intimate health and provide vaginal rejuvenation, however, some symptoms can be precursors to deeper medical problems. If these symptoms are only addressed by DiVa and not by a doctor, it could be worse in the long run. It’s like makeup – makeup can clear your skin and help you look better, but if you have a serious skin condition, then seeking medical help is better than simply applying makeup. The same goes for vaginal rejuvenation, you should make certain that your symptoms are not related to any serious medical problems before getting DiVa.

Of course, the FDA has other concerns regarding misleading marketing. Some cosmetic centers got into trouble with the FDA for suggesting that vaginal rejuvenation treatments have no possible side effects, which, of course, is misleading. Every medical and cosmetic procedure has potential side effects, and DiVa is no exception. Any institution who claims that their product or service has no potential side effects is lying.

The FDA is currently looking into full DiVa approval, although that takes time. After all, the FDA isn’t known to be the speediest office around. Since DiVa’s revolutionary technology is relatively new and the medical community as a whole has only just skimmed the surface about women’s vaginal health, the FDA has much to research before giving a full stamp of approval.

The Oakland Press wrote an article concerning DiVa , where Dr. Cheryl B Iglesia, former chairwoman of the Committee on Gynecologic Practice of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists talked about DiVa and the FDA. She summarized it by confirming that DiVa is safe. She thinks that, “The FDA is trying to be conservative. They do not want the marketing to be ahead of the science on this.”

The Bottom Line:

The most important thing to keep in mind when considering DiVa Therapy or any beautification service is that it’s important to talk to your doctor first. Before getting DiVa, you want to be certain that you don’t suffer from any serious health conditions. If your doctor has confirmed that you’re good to go, then DiVa may be exactly what you’re looking for! Your doctor and beautician want what’s best for you. Your health and safety are top priority, and we all want to make certain that you feel your best!
