October is Halloween month. A month of horror movies, scary nights, dressing up and fun. In Northern Virginia there are a ton of fright-night style events – haunted scare trails, spooky houses, and more. Have you noticed how many of these events feature sinister doctors and twisted nurses to enact horror upon your body? A trip to Aesthetica won’t have you screaming in horror, but some of the cosmetic treatments available may have you wondering where the inspiration came from!
The trend towards non-surgical procedures has healthcare companies researching and perfecting new techniques to woo the medical profession and general public to try them out. What may have been considered shocking and unpleasant decades ago is now common place. What are these procedures, and could you be brave enough to try them out?
Using Your Own Blood
Bloodletting (taking blood from the body for health purposes) has been around for thousands of years and has only in the last hundred years been shown as a worthless medical procedure. Modern medicine and knowledge is vastly superior and the advent of medicine and surgical techniques has surpassed this medieval technique of rebalancing the humors of the body.
But studies have shown that using your own blood that has been removed, processed to extract certain properties and then injected or rubbed over the body can help with rejuvanating the skin and encouraging collagen production.
It’s called PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and can be used to encourage hair regrowth on the head or added to the end of a micro-needling procedure. Your own blood is taken in vials and put through a machine to extract all the plasma. This is then injected into the hairline to jump start hair growth or injected under your facial skin to help promote collagen production. And it’s all natural to your body.
If you are having it injected into your skin or applied after micro-needling you will look a little ghoulish. Have it done on the day of a Halloween party and you can combine it with a costume to delight your friends. There are no leeches or rusty needles involved – honest!

Laser Peel Your Face
Who remembers the famous scene in the 1964 film Goldfinger where Bond is tied down and a laser machine is slowly moving towards him ready to cut him in half? Don’t be alarmed, laser peels are not like this at all! You won’t be tied down, and the laser is a much gentler version, designed to remove a fine layer of skin and encourage new skin regrowth that will be tighter, brighter, and plumper.
A Micro Laser Peel can be a simple laser skin-resurfacing or a deeper peel depending on what you want to achieve. Ask what machines are used and research the companies and their safety records before undergoing it. Only choose someone who is experienced and qualified to use the machine. Your skin will look red and raw for a few days after, but then wrinkles will be smoothed and sun damage reduced. You will be out and about in public soon after, maybe enjoying a martini – shaken not stirred.
