Some people are obsessed with the Best Dressed Lists or the Worlds Most Beautiful but here at Aesthetica we want to know what the plastic surgery trends are and ensure we have the right equipment and products to offer these popular procedures to our clients. So our favorite list is American Society of Plastic Surgeons “National Plastic Surgery Statistics.” The 2018 list is great reading!

In 2018, almost 18 million people underwent some form of plastic surgery in America. That means a quarter million more people went to a plastic surgeon in 2018 than in 2017. And the trend seems to be continuing. There are a number of reasons for this.

Millennials: Why Are They So Fascinated With Plastic Surgery?

Here they come! Those pesky Millennials causing a ruckus in yet another industry. Since 2013, there has been a 47% increase in procedures performed and 72% of plastic surgeons surveyed say they’ve noticed an increase in patients under the age of 30.

Over the course of the past few years Millennials have put a huge emphasis on self-care and “the selfie.” With almost constant access to social media, people are able to see pictures of friends, acquaintances and famous people anytime and anywhere. The trend of taking the perfect “selfie” and posting it on social media for followers to view means that people are spending more time looking at pictures of themselves and recognizing things they want to change. For many who already struggle with insecurity over some part of their body, this can lead to a desire to try and fix it. Millennials are also obsessed with the idea of self-care ranging from skin care routines to mental health. Many see having a cosmetic procedure part of their self-care: not only will it enhance their perceived beauty, but it will also help build up their self-esteem.

Prejudices: They Are Changing

The increase in Millennials entering the cosmetic surgery ring has given a bit of a “face-lift” to the plastic surgery industry. Prior to the recent boom in procedures, many patients were ashamed of having a procedure and would do everything possible to keep it private. The before and after pictures were locked away somewhere safe, and no one was the wiser. In recent years, surgeons have been seeing an increase in people requesting their before and after pictures to be put on the website. Patients are proud of their choice of self care. These changes have made people from all walks of life much more comfortable with choosing a procedure. People are opening up about the enhancements they are having and are being honest with friends and family when questioned about their fresh new look.

What Are All These Millions Of People Having Done?

As with everything in the beauty world, there are trends in cosmetic surgery too. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported what the most popular surgical procedures of 2018 were:

  1. Breast augmentation (both reductions and enlargements) — 313,735 procedures.
  2. Liposuction — 258,558 procedures.
  3. Nose reshaping — 213,780 procedures.
  4. Eyelid surgery — 206,529 procedures.
  5. Tummy tuck — 130,081 procedures.

The most popular non-surgical procedures were:

  1. Botox – 7,437,378 procedures
  2. Fillers – 2,676,970 procedures
  3. Chemical peels – 1,384,327 procedures
  4. Laser hair removal – 1,077,490 procedures
  5. Microdermabrasion – 709,413 procedures

There has been a decrease in people having surgical facial procedures because of the increase in the availability of less invasive alternative options, such as non-surgical nose reshaping and eye puffiness reduction.

Preventative Procedures Are On The Rise

Millennials are trending more towards preventative procedures. The ASPS reported more people in their 20s and 30s having botox and fillers to maintain their fresh and youthful looks. The idea is to maintain a natural look instead of going back and trying to ‘fix’ something.  Gone are the days of overly enhanced looks, such as Kylie Jenner’s lips circa 2016. Now people are going for a natural and fresh look which doesn’t require such invasive procedures.

People in their 40s are getting face-lifts both surgical and non-surgical (like the Liquid Facelift). These were traditionally the domain of the 50s. As plastic surgery and injectibles become more mainstream, people are adding them into their skin care regimes. Laser treatments to help complexion, BBL to reverse DNA and regular trips for Botox are considered the norm for more and more people.

Things To Think About

As procedures become more mainstream, and the availability of non-surgical options increases, more people are finding themselves able to afford plastic surgery. Many clinics have special offers and discount days. We encourage you not to get something done on a whim. Please always do research and seek professional advice from a board-certified physician before having any work done. Although the faux pas of going “under the knife” is becoming something of the past, finding a professional who knows what they are doing is still crucial.
