Regardless of the working environment or lifestyle, the COVID-19 has brought significant changes to the way we live as a society: many of us were required to spend countless days indoors, away from our regular activities. For some of us, this lockdown was more of a blessing than a curse. However, the majority of people felt trapped, unable to enjoy their lives to the fullest.

For many of us, however, the inability to eat outside regularly or practice excessive shopping came as a much-needed break: added to a steady income, the financial prospects started to look a lot better. It gave people the ability to buy a new TV or a laptop, anything that would keep them going toward the end of the quarantine.

The same applies to plastic surgery enthusiasts who sought to increase their confidence by improving certain aesthetic imperfections. In this article, we’re going to explore the most popular post-pandemic procedures, as well as the trends during 2020.

A Nightmare on Zoom

The worldwide shift toward online learning and working from home brought a heavier dependence on online platforms (Zoom, WebEx, etc.). That’s when many patients realized how different their jowls and neck folds look during online video conferences than in front of the mirror. What does this translate into? A quick run to the plastic surgeon.

A stunning look in front of the video camera has become the norm nowadays, which is why injectable fillers and cosmetic surgical procedures (facelift, neck lift, etc.) have been a much sought-after choice lately. Moreover, because of the risk of contracting the virus in hospitals, patients have preferred quality over price and chose experienced, well-trained practitioners.

Enough Time for Downtime

The advent of working from home came as a relief for potential patients who were considering a cosmetic surgical procedure. For many patients, however, these procedures were always something of a taboo, since busy working schedules have no mercy upon long periods of downtime.

Take, for example, procedures whose primary focus is on the abdominal area: tummy tuck and liposuction. Downtime associated with these procedures is inescapable. Nevertheless, as the plastic surgeons resumed their activity in June, patients flocked to the medical facilities, ready to both lose stubborn pockets of fat and enjoy the possibility of downtime while working from home.

Plastic Surgery During the Pandemic

The beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic brought a wave of grim prospects for the practice of plastic surgery. Without potential customers, many plastic surgeons were required to close their businesses and rethink their future strategies. However, three months into the pandemic, practitioners received authorizations to reopen their doors. It was the moment many patients were waiting for, and the numbers are there to prove it.

In July alone, plastic surgeons reported a 20% increase in overall demand for their practices vs. the same month last year. Some practitioners had to go even further than that and hire extra staff to handle the volume of consultations and bookings. For other practitioners, the month of July has brought the biggest wave of clients in years, while some think that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Most Popular Post-Pandemic Cosmetic Procedures

With the data from multiple conducted surveys, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has concluded that the public’s attitude towards plastic surgery has stayed positive during the pandemic. Out of all procedures, injectable fillers were the most sought-after, followed by more invasive treatments. Moreover, many of the patients who took part in the surveys displayed an eagerness to undergo in-office procedures as soon as practices reopened.

Curious to see what people have in mind when it comes to plastic surgery? Here, we have a list of patient preferences made by the ASPS:

  • Botulinum Toxin Type A – 65%
  • Breast Augmentation – 44%
  • Soft Tissue Fillers – 37%
  • Liposuction – 30%
  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) – 24%
