In this grand era of ever-increasing access to all kinds of information, it makes sense that if you’re considering plastic surgery, one of the first things you may find yourself doing is taking to the internet. A veritable ocean of data is pressing against that dam of a search bar. All it takes is a tap of the finger, and you can learn more than you ever wanted to know about the surgery you’re thinking about.

One of the most helpful resources for many can be found on YouTube. More and more plastic surgeons are seeing the way audiences are flocking to this video-hosting site, and are hopping on board. But while it’s easy enough to upload a video, for the discerning eye, these videos can be far more telling than intended. How can you use this free resource to decide it this surgery, and more importantly, doctor, are for you? Read on my friend.

Are These Videos by Plastic Surgeons Accurate?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons noticed the rise in videos of plastic surgery appearing on social media, and decided to do a study to evaluate the reliability of the information contained in these videos. They discovered that most of the videos readily available were low quality – on both the aesthetic and the information about the surgeries.

Using a version of a tool called EQIP (Ensuring Quality Information for Patients), they analyzed the contents of over five hundred videos and learned that around 60% were produced by doctors or surgeons, 20% by recipients of surgery themselves, and 20% by marketing companies or other such services. Out of all these videos, less that 10% thoroughly dealt with the negative side of plastic surgeries, such as possible risks or side effects.

An interesting discovery revealed that the quality was significantly higher in videos created by doctors themselves, but only for about half of these surgeon developed videos.

Why is a Video of a Plastic Surgery a Good Test?

You may be asking, “So what? Just because a doctor isn’t a great video producer doesn’t mean he’ll mess up my tummy tuck!” And you’d be correct in this assertion. However, if a doctor is advertising him or herself on a Youtube channel or other platform, this is a great resource for the discerning viewer to get a peek into the level of care that can be expected.

Is the video easily understandable, full of accurate and helpful information? Do you get to “meet” the doctor themselves in the video? Do they address the possible adverse reactions or side effects from the surgery? If the video is of a live surgery, note the demeanor of the patient as well as the doctor in addition to the general level of professionalism and bedside manner.

How Can a Video of a Plastic Surgery Procedure Reveal a Quack?

The final way you can check your potential doctor’s credentials is to determine whether the physician creating the content is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Doctors that are board-certified are held to higher standards and accountability, and this provides the assurance that you will be operated on by someone who has received proper training.
