Botox is such a famous product that it has spent a fair amount of it’s lifetime in the spotlight. From hilarious moments in movies to famously receiving credit from red-carpet walkers, Botox has impacted this generation and the one before tremendously. It’s time to say thank you and Happy Birthday to Botox!

Since Botox’s humble beginning 30 years ago, over a hundred million vials of Botox have been created worldwide, allowing it to continue making its mark as a trustworthy and worthwhile choice to combat all sorts of cosmetic and therapeutic needs. Since its official approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Botox has received two additional approvals to be used in therapies addressing both upper and lower limb spasticity. This brings Botox to it’s fourteenth way of being used both aesthetically and therapeutically.

A Brief History of Botox

In 1989, Botox made its debut as a way to treat two rare dysfunctional eye muscle disorders called blepharospasm and strabismus. It would be the first ever FDA approved botulinum toxin type A.  Botox has gone on to be used to treat a myriad of diseases and difficulties, including limb spasticity, hyperactive bladder, incontinence, and severe sweating in the armpit, and more. Allergan, the creator of Botox, continues to follow through on their commitment to both developing the uses of Botox, and making sure it is an option available and affordable to patients in need.

Since Botox was the first ever neurotoxin treatment declared safe for cosmetic procedures, it has remained a leader in that same field of research, being backed by over 17 years of scientific data. Initially, Botox was used to address frown lines between the eyebrows, and has gone on to plump lips, smooth crows feet and forehead lines, contour cheeks, and so much more.

What to Expect During a Botox Treatment

Botox treatments are able to be administered as an outpatient procedures in most cosmetic surgery offices. Your doctor will chat with you about your desired outcomes and expectations, and have you move your face in a variety of expressions to help get a good idea of skin flexibility and needs. Your doctor will mark the areas where injections will be placed, and then prepare you to receive the Botox injections.

A small needle will inject the Botox beneath your skin, after which a cool compress will be applied to reduce any swelling, pain, and potential bruises that may form. Some patients request a local anesthetic or numbing cream to be applied beforehand, but generally no pain relievers are required. The total time of your Botox treatment can be as short as ten to fifteen minutes, depending on the size of the treated areas.

Will You Need Time Off for Botox Recovery?

You can expect to return to your normally scheduled routine immediately following your Botox injections, as long as you avoid any extremely active movements like working out for the next day or so. Your doctor may recommend that you sleep with your head slightly elevated to reduce any swelling and that you avoid touching your face excessively, as this may cause the Botox to move to other areas of your face.

While there may be a small amount of bruising, swelling, or redness around the injection sites, you will see these improve rapidly within the first week, and the final results of your procedure will come to light! The results from Botox last around three to four months, after which you may not be ready to say goodbye to your beautifully enhanced look. In that case, you may wish to schedule a refresh appointment with your cosmetic surgeon of choice.

How to Find a Doctor You Trust to Do Your Botox

While Botox is a minimally invasive procedure, with a small recovery time, it is important to choose your cosmetic surgeon cautiously. The likelihood of your new results meeting, or even exceeding your expectations is not great if your doctor is not a professional, certified by the Board of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Phillip Chang at Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center in Leesburg, Virginia, is board certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a diamond Allergan provider of BOTOX and Juvéderm injectables.

A certified practitioner means that they will know exactly what amount and placement to give you the glowing, wrinkle-free, and organic-looking enhancement you are hoping for.

Happy Birthday, Botox!

Tired of seeing sagging skin, crow’s feet, or any other areas of your face gradually succumbing to time’s incessant wear and tear?
