The benefits of breast reduction surgery are well known. Ariel Winter, from the hit show Modern Family recently brought the spotlight to how and why teenagers may benefit from this life-altering procedure just as much as their more mature elders.
Ariel Winter from the hit show Modern Family had a breast reduction surgery in 2015 when when she was only 17 years old. She describes how her breasts ballooned to a 32F when she was only 15 years old. This is not a unique story; breast development is beginning earlier and earlier. Some young women will begin their breast development around 11 years of age.
What is unique to Ariel, is that by this age, she was an actress on a wildly successful television sitcom called Modern Family. Her audience was able to watch her development and this made her extremely self-conscious.
In an interview with Glamour Magazine after her breast reduction, she stated that she: “feels like a new person” since having the surgery.
Winter says being a public figure, especially a female celebrity, meant lots of unwanted attention on her chest.
Unwanted Sexual Attention
“It made me feel really uncomfortable, because as women in the industry, we are totally oversexualized and treated like objects. Every article that has to do with me on a red carpet had to do with ‘Ariel Winter’s Crazy Cleavage!’ or ‘Ariel Winter Shows Huge Boobs at an Event!’ That’s all people would recognize me by – not, ‘Oh, she does great work on Modern Family,’” she said. I’d have to wear the dress that was super tight and form-fitted everywhere, because if I didn’t, it didn’t look good.
Physical Pain from Breasts
These feelings are not unique to Ariel Winter just because of her celebrity status.
Similar feelings have been well documented in large population studies on the benefits of breast reduction surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, overly large breasts can cause emotional and physical pain for women.
All the negative feelings about having large breasts are enhanced in impressionable teenagers and young women. These include unwanted attention, inability to find properly fitting bras and clothing, and inability to easily exercise.
Winter said she suffered a great deal of pain before the surgery and couldn’t even stand up straight.
“It started to hurt so bad that I couldn’t take the pain,” she said. “My neck was hurting so bad, and I actually had some problems with my spine.”
After the Breast Reduction
Ariel Winter is a mere 5 foot 1 inches tall and went from a F cup to a D cup. Ideally, breast reduction surgery allows women to have a breast size that’s proportional to their body to no longer cause discomfort.
Winter says she now feels happier than she ever has and wanted to share her story to help others.
“It’s something that I did to better my life and better my health, and I think that that can benefit a lot of young girls,” she said.
Insurance will sometimes cover the surgery if it’s determined it will relieve medical issues. Cost for the procedure can be high, since it covers factors like surgical fees, anesthesia, and medication.
