Botox Neck Lift

Nonsurgical neck rejuvenation

Mini Facelift

Not all patients will need surgery to rejuvenate the neck. Botox is a nonsurgical option that can help address the appearance of minor vertical neck bands.

Vertical neck bands are the result of the aging of the platysma muscle that normally runs between the jaw line, the neck angle, and the clavicle.  It is a paired muscle that normally joins in the midline and functions in several functions including chewing, frowning, turning, and even speaking.  Over-use and age will  result in the splitting of the muscle in the midline as well as detaching the muscle from the angle of the neck.  The split platysma appears as two parallel vertical bands.

Minor changes banding can be addressed with botox.  Major splitting with sagging of the neck skin will require a surgical platysmaplasty.

The split platysma muscle in the neck can be seen as two parallel vertical bands in the midline of the neck.  As they separate, they also separate from their attachments to the underlying structures of the neck.  The result is that the nice right angle that defines the an elegant neck is lost.  Instead, the muscle appear to extend directly from the chin to the collar bone.  The muscle becomes less efficient and contracts more to become more efficient.  Tension in the muscle not only appears more visibly, but it causes the neck skin to stretch and fall faster.

Botox is a nonsurgical injection product that reduces muscle tension.  The result is less visibility of the vertical platysma edges and a smoother neck.  Botox also has the ability to slow down the aging of the neck because the platysma muscle no longer pulls and stretches the neck skin.

Because botox reduces the tension in the platysma muscle, the platysma muscle is no longer to inefficiently pull and stretch the neck skin.

There is a normal tug of war between the muscles in the face and the muscles of the neck.  The platysma normally aids in some facial movements that help the jaw move down and side to side.  This is a downward movement.

Because the action of botox in the neck is to weaken the platysma muscle, the muscles of the face become relatively stronger.  These muscles pull up on the face.  Botox in the neck therefore results in elevation of the facial muscles and jowls.

  • There is no down-time.  Patients can immediately return to work

As with any surgery, there are associated risks.  Only you can decide whether a platysmaplasty can achieve your goals and whether the recovery and risk profile are acceptable to you.  Complications are rare.

  • Bruising
  • Asymmetry (unevenness between two sides)
  • Alergic reaction
  • Under-correction
  • Over-correction

Unsatisfactory results that may require additional injections.  Patients will generally be responsible for any associated fees
