Botox for TMJ Pain

Nonsurgical option for TMJ pain

Botox Injections - alternative for facelift surgery

Excruciating pain from TMJ can be addressed by a simple Botox treatment.  TMJ pain is often caused by muscular spasms, which results from the surrounding muscles trying to compensate for the abnormal anatomy or movement around the TMJ joint.

Botox is able to decrease and often eliminate TMJ associated pain for up to 6 months at a time by relaxing the surrounding muscles.

Botox has the ability to relax the myofascial pain associated with an abnormal TMJ joint.  There are many muscles that affect the TMJ joint including the masseter, the temporalis, and the medial and lateral pterygoid muscles.  These muscles normally assist in the opening and closing of the jaw.

Abnormal TMJ anatomy including arthritis or joint displacement can cause the muscles that affect the joint to spasm and cause pain.  Relaxing these muscles has the affect of calming the area down and provides a smoother gliding action around the TMJ joint.

Botox is directly injected into the muscles surrounding the TMJ joint.  The procedure will take no more than a few minutes.

Spastic muscles cause pain.  Botox can be injected directly into the spastic muscles around the TMJ joint to relief any associated pain.

Botox for TMJ pain typically lasts for about 4-6 glorious months.  In contrast, botox for cosmetic purposes will typically last only 3-4 months.

  • There is no down-time.  Patients can immediately return to work

  • Botox takes 3-5 days to begin to work

  • Botox does not reach maximum effect for about 2 weeks
  • Botox lasts for about 4-6 months

  • Patients who prepay every 6 months are offered a discount

As with any surgery, there are associated risks.  Only you can decide whether a platysmaplasty can achieve your goals and whether the recovery and risk profile are acceptable to you.  Complications are rare.

  • Bruising
  • Asymmetry (unevenness between two sides)
  • Alergic reaction
  • Under-correction
  • Over-correction

Unsatisfactory results that may require additional injections.  Patients will generally be responsible for any associated fees

We charge botox by the units used.  On average, TMJ joint requires about 25-39 units.  See the price card below.
