2020 was certainly an unprecedented year. It brought Zoom calls, mask-wearing, virtual dates, social distancing, lockdowns, and probably more stress wrinkles and gray hair than any of us would like to admit. However, it wasn’t all bad! Lots of important lessons were learned in the past year, like prioritizing self-care, how to face and fix personal stressors, how to be happy with yourself, and how to be grateful for good health!

How did this unusual year affect cosmetic surgery trends? 2019 saw over 20 million individuals in the US undergo cosmetic procedures, the most popular of which were breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and facelifts. And in 2020, even under unforeseen circumstances, millions of people nationwide still turned to plastic and cosmetic surgeons to look and feel their best, although maybe for different reasons! Even amidst a pandemic, cosmetic surgery is safe and might even be more appealing, given the circumstances!

Safety Is Our Priority

If 2020 has taught us anything, let’s talk safety first. People who are curious about getting ANY procedure, whether medically necessary or cosmetic, in the midst of a global health crisis are obviously most concerned about the exposure risk that accompanies a procedure performed in any medical setting.

Safety has always been a top priority to cosmetic surgery centers, which is even more true now. Most offices have put enhanced procedures in place to ensure the safety and lower the virus risk for their patients and staff. Mandatory masks enhanced cleaning and sterilization practices, spaced scheduling, and moving to lots of virtual consultations help make the offices as safe as possible.

Cosmetic professionals have assured potential patients that getting any procedure done in 2021 will not pose an additional risk to your health!

Plastic and Cosmetic Procedures Are Still An Option

So, now that you can put aside concerns about getting sick (at least in this instance!) let’s talk about why MORE people are interested in cosmetic procedures in this mid-pandemic world. The big why behind getting any “work” done is obviously to look and feel your best. Unfortunately, covid-19 restrictions took away many ways people do that – gyms, hair and nail salons, spas, etc., all got shut down at some point during the year. People worldwide were left with more time to consider the things they didn’t like about themselves and fewer resources to fix them, not to mention the Zoom cameras that make everything look worse! Luckily, plastic or cosmetic procedures are still an option. 2020 saw an increase in people getting Botox, fillers, and facelifts to look younger and less tired (even just on-screen!). With masks becoming a daily accessory, there was also a clear shift to focus on the eyes; with the rest of your face covered, eye wrinkles, bags, and sagging skin in the eye area became more noticeable and problematic. Lots of individuals – both men and women – are opting for eye-related procedures so that when you “speak with your eyes,” you aren’t saying, “I’m tired and worn out!”

Make Self-Care A Priority

Perhaps one of the best things to come from a worry-filled year was a surge in self-care. Everyone realized how important it is to prioritize taking care of yourself, and cosmetic surgery is a great way to do that! With our routines and normalcy interrupted, taking the time to fix a physical area that has bothered you is a great way to prioritize yourself and feel better.

Lots of Time To Recover and Heal

Now, for some practical considerations. Most cosmetic procedures require at least a little bit of downtime for recovery and healing. With more time at home, a pandemic is, in that way, the BEST time to get a procedure! You’ll have the time and convenience to recover privately at home, and you could even use that handy mask to cover up any potential bruising or injection marks! Depending on what you have done, your follow-up appointments might even be virtual. How convenient! Additionally, procedures obtained for purely cosmetic reasons often carry an out-of-pocket cost. If 2020 took away your vacations, dining out habits, or gym/spa visits, this might be a time you have more disposable income to spend on a procedure you’ve had your eye on!
